About Our Groups

Sustainability is a very broad subject. It addresses the infrastructure of society: how to make it actually work so that everyone wins for generations to come. With that in mind, please take a look at our photos, videos, blogs and see if there is something useful for you there. Please share with us what you know and what you are discovering. What to do!

Watch these two short videos showing a 30-year-old food forest!
A man in Great Britain takes you on a quick tour of his food forest, explaining each of the seven layers, and what he is growing. When you finish with Part 1, you will see Part 2 on the same page. If you are in a hurry, just watch Part 2 because it is the concise tour.

What is permaculture?
Here is a series of short videos showing Bill Mollison setting up permaculture in Africa and India. Answer to poverty. Answer to food shortages. Watch to the end of the last video -- it is worth it.

Attend the Permaculture Design Course.
This life-changing course will be offered in Myakka City at Florida's first Earthship, February 26 to March 10, 2009. This is the definitive course where you will learn how to create a world of abundance instead of scarcity, and earn your certification as a permaculture designer.

See this excellent article about a permaculturist who grows enough food in his yard to make a living.

See The Permaculture Guild website for more news on the upcoming permaculture course.

Read Cory's win from taking the Permaculture Design Course.

Earthships 101 Part 1 and Part II
Full explanation of the inner workings of an earthship, a structure that can exist completely "off the grid."

Here are a couple of articles about the local food movement:

Read Eat my florida: Is it better to eat local? Is it even possible?
An excellent article on a local food critic's adventures with Community Supported Agriculture. This is our challenge!

Read Ten Steps to Becoming a Locavore
A locavore? What the heck is that, and why would I want to be one? This article will help in understanding the "buy local" movement.

Read Wildcrafting and Edible Landscapes by Doc Shillington
See his article in the Forum re identifying wild plants that are edible. We are going to be covering this topic in greater detail in the near future.

Read How to Grow Food in Sand
In the Forum section, see the excellent article about growing food in the challenging sand of Florida, written by Cory and her son Stephen.

Make Starter Pots from Junk Mai
Bill cleverly designed starter pots from junk mail. On Forum page, full step by step procedure for way to save money and get your plants started.

Survey
Please take a look on the Forum page and see if you can answer any of these questions

Sprouting!
One of the healthiest, simplest and most sustainable ways to eat. See full article on Forum page.

Create a Worm Farm!
Read the brand-new article by Rebecca on Worm Farming (Forum page). You will be learning how to create a worm farm at our next Sunday meeting. Rebecca has given us a short list of four items that you should bring Sunday if you wish to take a worm farm home with you (the list and where to get everything is more detailed in her article): plastic bin with secure fitting lid, old newspapers—the equivalent of 2 or 3 Sunday papers, old t-shirt, container of Red Wigglers.

Read Paper vs. Plastic (see Forum page).
Thank you, Cory, for writing and posting this timely article on the Great Debate: Paper or Plastic, and the benefits of just bypassing the entire debate and "bringing your own." This informative article includes some very good links.

Watch "The Dangers of Plastic Bags"
You will find this on the Know-How page under "Waste."

Read "Seeds for Florida Gardening"
Another excellent article from our master gardener, Ellen, on the unique challenges of growing plants from seeds in Florida, and where to get the seeds that will grow. Thanks, Ellen.

Watch The Story of Stuff.
Go to the Know-How/Know-Base page and find the Story of Stuff video in the Permaculture section. This is a 20-minute feature that is not-to-be-missed. Thanks, Cory, for this tip.

Join a group.
Sustainability touches every area of our lives, and each of us has special talents and interests in specific areas. Visit our Groups and see if there is an area you would like to contribute to.

Check out our Know-How page, Tutorials and Classes section, or Videos page. Build your understanding of the theory behind what we are doing, and then join us as we learn how to put the ideas of sustainability into real terms.

Come to an event. Every week we are tackling something new, as you will see from our Photos--last week we created the great beginnings of a food forest. This week we will be learning about sprouting. We would love to see you there!
